This week on Thursday, October 30th, our next speaker will be Dr. Sandeep Reddy (Sharath's Dad). Dr Reddy will talk about Public Health.
This will be a great opportunity for our club members to learn about the role of healthcare professionals in Public Health. Please remember to come at lunch time to Room D-2 for our club meeting.
The club is for Mira Loma High students who are primarily interested in: - Community Service - Health issues impacting high school students - Learning about healthcare careers, and - Getting trained and certified in CPR, AED and Disaster Preparedness

Field Trip - Shriners Hospital - Thu 13NOV08
The Shriners Hospital of Northern California in Sacramento has very kindly agreed to host the Just for the Health of It! club of Mira Loma High for an exclusive presentation and tour of the hospital.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a one-of-a-kind health care system dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research and outstanding teaching programs. The Shriners Hospital of Northern California specializes in Burn Care, Orthopaedic Care and Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation. Shriners Hospitals for Children is dedicated to conducting innovative research to provide answers to complex medical difficulties affecting children.
This field trip to Shriners Hospital will be an excellent educational opportunity for all of our club members to see and listen to some of the top-notch and most dedicated healthcare professionals. The field trip will include a tour of the hospital and a presentation from various specialists at the hospital.
When: Thursday, November 13th, 2008
Time: 2:30pm to 4:30pm (assemble at the hospital lobby at 2:15pm for registration)
Where: Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd, Sacramento CA 95817
Transportation: Parents will need to drop-off and pick-up.
(Directions from school will be provided later)

Community Service
Those who need to start on their community service soon to get their hours, use the links provided on the blog.

POSTER COMPETITION!
Get into pairs or do it all by yourself! Make a poster that informs people about either:
a) How to prevent the flu, or
b) How to prevent menangitis.
Competition ends on Thursday, October 30th, 2008 when all members get to vote for their favorite one. The top two winners will be submitted for approval to be put arround the campus.
Remember to put the club name in the poster - "Just for the Health of It!".

TEEN CERT Program
Hello Friends
Ms Carol Willis, TEEN CERT coordinator from Sacramento Region Office of Homeland Security will be coming to attend our next meeting this Thursday October 23rd, 2008. She will present to us information on the TEEN CERT program.
The TEEN CERT program will help us with the following:
1) provide knowledge on effects of man made and natural disasters
2) build decision making and problem solving skills and strategies to reduce loss of life and property, and
3) provide hands-on training using reality-driven drills and exercises.
I am really excited to have Ms. Willis agree to come to our club at Mira Loma and talk about this program. Please make sure you attend the meeting this Thursday and invite your friends to come too.

Veggie Chase 5K and Kids Runs
Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture Project allows youth and adults to rediscover and participate in a system of food production and distribution that promotes healthy living, nurtures the environment and brings people together to share the simple pleasures of living in harmony with nature. Soil Born is committed to developing programming focused on organic food production, healthy food education and food access for all residents.
The Kaiser Permanente "Veggie Chase 5K and Kids Runs" celebrates Soil Born's 25-Acre American River Farm site! This site is currently in development stages and will be producing certified organic vegetables, fruits, and eggs on about 4 acres. Located between the urban edge of Rancho Cordova and the American River (adjacent to Hagan Park) this farm will be the long-term home of Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture Project. This event celebrates the incredible efforts and mission of this OUTSTANDING organization!
